Saifur Rahman
Saifur Rahman was born in the village of Baharmardan, Moulvibazar in 1932.
Education:
Saifur Rahman completed his graduation in BA (Hons) in 1953. Later he studied in London, England til 1958. There he obtained a fellowship in chartered accountancy from the Institute of Chartered Accounts. He became a specialist in Monetary, Fiscal and Development Economics. He was the president of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Bangladesh. and president of Bangladesh Jatishangha Samiti.
Political Career:
Saifur Rahman was one of the participants of the language movement in 1952. That time he was the vice-president of the Dhaka University's Muslim Hall (Currently S.M. Hall). This scholar joined a political party coalition named ‘The Jatiyatabadi Ganatantrik Dal’ in 1977. which became known as the Bangladesh Nationalist Party in 1978.
When Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) came into power after a general election in 1979, then he was appointed as the finance minister of the first BNP government under Ziaur Rahman and served until 1980.
Saifur Rahman prepared a record 12 budgets in Bangladesh and has been hailed for opening up Bangladesh's economy in the early 1990s and pioneering major economic reforms.
Personal Life:
Saifur Rahman has three sons and a daughter. His wife Sajre Rahman succumbed critical illness in 2006. One of the sons M. Naser Rahman was a successful contender in by-elections for his left constituency Maulvibazar-3 in 2001.
Death:
This experienced BNP leader came victim of a shocking road crash on September 5, 2009, in Brahmanbaria District on his way to Dhaka from his home district Maulvibazar. At 3:20PM local time on the day, he succumbed his serious wounds in the Brahmanbaria Health Complex, Brahmanbaria, forming up the shadow of shock and mourning in his home district, the party he spent his life to serve in as well as the economist's arena of the country.
